Puppies!

Everyone said it was a match made in heaven. Dandi and Zinny had known each other from an early age. In fact since they were puppies themselves.  Zinny was just a little bit older and they were the best of friends right from the start.

On and off there had been talk of getting them together. Zinny’s gentle nature, graceful movement and innate intelligence might blend really nicely with Dandy’s more robust, fun loving, sociable character. It would be an interesting mix to produce some lovely small family dogs for loving homes.

For a year or two all the sensible reasons not to get them together prevailed. It is a big responsibility bringing new puppies into the world on many levels. As time went by, one person after the next said if Zinny and Dandy were ever to have puppies, then they would love one. They really appreciated the features of both the parents and could see a dog that picked up both parents characteristics would work really well for them.

All breeding has a certain random element, even with the most preplanned pedigree dogs. So much of what goes into the pedigree breeds is the initial need for a dog to serve one purpose or another. While Zinny & Dandy’s puppies would never be pedigree, they would follow a clear thought process of the human owners looking to create lovable family dogs.

Then the time came for Zinny’s next season and the choice was made to bring them together.  Zinny came to stay at Dandy’s house for a few days. Initially nothing much happened. They were very happy, as ever, to see each other and enjoyed their walks together. Then it became clear that both of them were getting very amorous. They were definitely in love. Before long the deed was done.

A few weeks later, Zinny was checked and it was confirmed that she was soon to be a mum. The weeks continued by, she got bigger and bigger, preparations were made for the forthcoming birth.  Then the weekend of the expected birth arrived.

Over the next few hours one pup after a next popped out smoothly and easily. All looked fit, vigorous and healthy.  They readily latched on to the teats and started suckling.  Eventually the last pup was born. Mum had done her work and now had a chance to rest for a bit while she proudly suckled her pups.

There are several more weeks of being with their mum before they go on to their new homes.  There will be many important stages of their development and a lot of work ahead for Zinny’s owners. You can follow the progress in the Puppy Blogs as we see how they all develop.

There will also be a number of useful Holistic Puppy Owner leaflets to look out for. Check the resources section of the website periodically to see what’s new.
