Tales from the consulting room: Exploring what you can do with your Pet First Aid kit - Post-op

Many pets have to have an operation at some time in their life. It may be a routine neutering procedure. Or perhaps a stitch up of barbed wire laceration.  Or maybe something bigger, a foreign body that needs removing from the intestines. Or maybe a fractured bone that needs a plate to stabilise it.

Of course, all these are Red Level procedures, with an appropriate  Green Level measures of support, such as restricted exercise. With the Red and the Green being nicely addressed, there are also some Amber Level things you can add in to encourage a more speedy, problem free recovery. Which has to be a good idea.

There are three common homeopathic remedies, that you will likely find in your first aid kit, that are very useful here to compliment your vet’s work.

Arnica – very good for physical trauma

Calendula – excellent to help skin heal

Hypericum – particular good for sore, sensitive wounds or nerve injury

The combination of the three together Arnica/Calendula/Hypericum can be very useful to help your pet’s recovery.  In the practice, I would typically give several doses on the day of the operation and then send the patient home with a dose three or four times daily for seven to ten days.

While it is not a double blind science trial, I know that over the years I see less issues with the wound healing when pets have been given these remedies. Or as I often put it, I see more coincidences when using homeopathy!

If you want to know more about homeopathy for your pets, then look out for the new services coming in 2023.
